Wesley pee-peed in the potty for the first time last night!
He has been familiar with his potty for quite some time. Charlie and I have encouraged him to sit on it at bath time for the past few months. He's always been so cute, sitting fully clothed on his potty like a big boy with his books. Always a book. He's fully embraced the idea of the reading room - Ha!
The last couple of weeks, I've been trying to get him to associate the idea of pee-peeing. His habit is to wait until he gets into the bathtub - naturally - before he pee-pees. (I actually wised up a while ago and now I don't take the diaper until he's been in the tub for at least one minute.) He has progressed to saying "Pee-pee" before he does it, so we've moved into the arena of Warning! before action.
Last night, he said "Pee-pee" and looked at his potty. I asked him if he wanted to sit on his potty to pee-pee, and he said yes in that lovely, unusual, and sweet way he has. I sat him on the potty, and at first, he made a little bit of a fuss. Of course, he was wet from his bath and probably a little cold, so I tried him off while he sat on the potty and told him it was okay to pee-pee if he had to - that's what the potty was for.
After about one minute, he stood up, turned and looked at the bowl, and said, "Pee-pee." Sure enough, there it was, in the bowl. Charlie and I made a big show of cheering, and Wesley clapped his hands and cheered, "Yay!" with us.
We're not pushing the potty training yet; after all, he is only two. And we've noticed that Wesley (like most kids, I guess) does things when he's ready and not before. We plan to follow his lead on this one. Still, it was a big moment, another indication that my little baby is growing.
And I couldn't be prouder.
